Paul and Silas went to Berea from Thessalonica to preach the gospel. Then as now the truth of the Bible often convicts the sinner and angers those that will not submit to God. Some of the Jewish leaders did not even try to refute the theology of Paul and Silas. They were simply jealous of the popularity of the true word of God. Some of the Jewish leaders started a riot in the city to stop the spread of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Their motives for starting the riot was rooted in personal jealousy, not in doctrinal purity. The young church of the day, using the scriptures (Mat 10:23), sent Paul and Silas to Berea, not for safety as much as to keep them preaching the Good News.
As soon as Paul and Silas arrived in Berea they went straight to the Jewish synagogue, as was Paul's custom. Paul and Silas came to Berea teaching the gospel. The "Good News Of Jesus Christ" was not the norm at that time. The Bereans had a freer thought, and lay more open and were willing to hear others points of view, then put what was said to the test of the scriptures. They neither prejudged the cause, nor were moved with envy at the messengers of it, as the Jews at Thessalonica were, but very generously gave both it and them, a fair hearing, without passion or partiality.
Their readiness of mind to receive the word was not such as that they took things upon trust. Paul reasoned to them out of the scriptures, and referred them to the Old Testament for the proof of what he said. The Bereans checked his scripture references and read them in there context, considered the scope of the message, then compared them with other scriptures, examined whether Paul's teaching was in line with the word of God. Then after seeing that Paul's teaching were consistent with the scriptures, accepted it and rejoiced with them.
The doctrine of Jesus Christ does not fear the scrutiny of man, nor should we. If our teaching and ministry are Bible based and are grounded in truth, we should also not fear the scrutiny of man. Only in the test of fire will gold be made pure. It is to all of this that I call to you "Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. (Isa 1:18 NIV)
